Westhoughton is a place in Lancashire in England. The village was founded in 1821. In 1871, it was a part of Lancashire, and later it became an urban district council with twelve members elected from four wards. In 1898, a portion of Over Hulton was added to the district council, and the Hulton ward returned three councillors. Andrew Carnegie donated the building that now houses the town library. Westhoughton also gave its name to the Parliamentary division of South-east Lancashire.
Westhoughton Chapel is the town’s main church, and is located in West Houghton. This chapel was built in 1731, and was consecrated by the Deane. The church was under Deane jurisdiction until 1860, but subsequently burned down and replaced by a new building, which was consecrated on October 28th, 1995. Several small chief-rents were granted to Lord Skelmersdale.
In 1552, the parish church was built in Westhoughton. The parish church was rebuilt in 1869-70. The parish church, built by Westhoughton Council, is a Grade II listed building. The parish church is dedicated to St Bartholomew, and the Roman Catholic Sacred Heart Parish Church is located on Lord Street. John Wesley preached in Barnaby’s Farm in April 1784.
